How to Apply a Decal to Hard Surface

Applying a decal to a window is a straightforward process, but it requires attention to detail to ensure a smooth and bubble-free application. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to apply a decal to a window:

  1. Gather Your Supplies:

    • Decal: Make sure you have the decal you want to apply to the window.
    • Cleaning Supplies: Prepare glass cleaner or a mixture of water and mild detergent, along with a clean cloth or paper towel to clean the window surface.
    • Squeegee or Credit Card: You'll need a squeegee or a credit card to help smooth out the decal during application.
    • Masking Tape (Optional): Masking tape can help secure the decal in place during application.
  2. Clean the Window Surface:

    • Thoroughly clean the window surface where you'll be applying the decal. Remove any dust, dirt, or residue using glass cleaner or a mixture of water and mild detergent. Make sure the window is completely dry before proceeding.
  3. Prepare the Decal:

    • Carefully remove the backing paper from the decal, exposing the adhesive side of the decal. Be cautious not to touch the adhesive side with your fingers to avoid leaving fingerprints or oils on the decal.
  4. Position the Decal:

    • Carefully position the decal on the window surface where you want it to be placed. Use masking tape to temporarily secure the decal in place if needed, ensuring it's aligned correctly.
  5. Apply the Decal:

    • Starting from one edge of the decal, gently press the decal onto the window surface using your fingers or a squeegee. Work slowly and methodically, applying even pressure to avoid trapping air bubbles under the decal.
    • Use a squeegee or a credit card to smooth out the decal from the center towards the edges, gradually removing any air bubbles as you go. Work in small sections, applying firm pressure to ensure the decal adheres securely to the window.
  6. Remove the Transfer Tape:

    • Once the decal is fully applied to the window surface, carefully peel away the transfer tape or backing paper, leaving the decal in place on the window. Work slowly and gently to avoid lifting the decal or damaging the design.
  7. Final Touches:

    • After removing the transfer tape, inspect the decal for any remaining air bubbles or imperfections. Use a squeegee or your fingers to smooth out any remaining bubbles, pressing them towards the edges of the decal for a seamless finish.
    • Allow the decal to fully adhere to the window surface for at least 24 hours before cleaning or touching it.

Following these steps will help you apply a decal to a window smoothly and effectively, creating a professional-looking result without any bubbles or wrinkles.
